The Role
Our team is collaborating with a company that aims to pioneer the future of play at one of the world's largest, most beloved toy companies and communities. We are looking for an experienced Backend Engineer who will own the backend systems that power AI-driven products used by children around the world. You’ll work closely with product engineers, ML researchers, and designers to bring magical AI experiences to life in a safe and reliable way.

What you will do

• Own the backend architecture powering our AI applications, with a focus on mobile-first experiences.

• Design and implement robust APIs and backend services that support real-time AI interactions and multi-step workflows.

• Integrate AI models and AI services (LLMs, audio, and video) into production systems - including orchestration, moderation, caching, prompt engineering and cost optimization.

• Implement scalable infrastructure for authentication, user/session management, content storage, and analytics event pipelines.

• Own deployment and production operations, including CI/CD, monitoring, alerting, incident response, and performance tuning.

• Build and enforce backend engineering best practices: observability, testing, documentation, rate limiting, security, and data privacy.

• Collaborate closely with mobile engineers and product teams to define API contracts and support rapid iteration.

• Work cross-functionally with AI researchers and ML engineers to integrate new models into product workflows safely and efficiently.
   

What you have

• 8+ years of hands-on industry experience as a Backend Engineer.

• Strong proficiency in Python (services, APIs, async workloads, integrations).

• Proven experience owning production systems end-to-end: deployment, observability, incident response, and scaling.

• Solid experience working with LLM-powered applications.

• Experience designing and building APIs that support mobile applications.

• Familiarity with cloud environments and production DevOps practices.

• Strong sense of ownership.

• Degree in Computer Science or related field.

Nice to have

• Experience integrating audio and/or video ML models into production workflows (streaming, job orchestration, async pipelines).

• Familiarity with model safety tooling (moderation, filtering, guardrails, policy enforcement), especially in child-facing products.

• Experience with performance/cost optimization of AI-backed services (caching strategies, batching, rate limiting, provider routing, observability for tokens/latency/cost).

• Experience with infrastructure-as-code and scalable deployments (Terraform, Kubernetes, Helm, etc.).
